What it is
The Johnson & Starley thermocouple is a flame-sensing component fitted in the pilot assembly of Johnson & Starley State PRV-series boilers. Heated by the pilot flame, it generates a small voltage that holds the gas valve open while the pilot is lit. If the flame is lost, the signal drops and the valve closes to shut off the gas supply.
Signs this part needs replacing
- The pilot flame goes out as soon as the control knob is released
- The boiler will not stay lit after the pilot is established
- Repeated flame failure lockouts during normal operation
- The pilot will not hold after several attempts to light it
- Intermittent shutdowns where the burner drops out without warning
