What it is
This is a sacrificial anode manufactured by Ariston, supplied under part number 991798 and specified as ANODE (D.32.3 L:400 M8) - UPTO DEC 2002. It is a consumable cylinder component that protects the inner vitreous enamel or steel surface of the water heater from corrosion by corroding preferentially in its place. This version is intended for Ariston appliances manufactured up to December 2002.
Signs this part needs replacing
- The anode rod is heavily pitted, flaking or reduced in section when inspected
- The anode has been consumed down to its core wire, leaving little or no sacrificial material
- Discoloured or cloudy hot water with a metallic taste or odour
- Rust staining around the anode connection or inside the cylinder
- The anode has been in service for the interval recommended by the manufacturer and has not been checked

- Confirm the appliance model against the fit list and check the manufacturing date is up to December 2002
- Verify the anode dimensions and M8 thread match the cylinder being worked on
- Isolate the appliance, drain it and depressurise before removing the old anode
- Check the condition of the anode boss or gasket sealing face while the anode is out
