What it is
The Ariston 990686-01 is a clip-on temperature probe used on a range of Ariston domestic gas boilers. It forms part of the thermocouple circuit and sits on the control panel side of the appliance, where it senses temperature and feeds that reading back to the boiler's control electronics. The probe is supplied with its retaining clip so it can be fixed directly onto the pipe or housing it monitors.
Signs this part needs replacing
- The boiler reports a temperature or sensor fault and locks out or fails to fire.
- Domestic hot water temperature is erratic, running hot then cold without any change at the tap.
- The displayed flow or return temperature does not match the actual pipe temperature.
- The appliance cycles or modulates unpredictably because the control board is receiving a poor signal.
- The probe or its clip is visibly damaged, corroded or has come loose from its mounting point.

- Quote the Gas Council number J26501 when checking with the manufacturer or merchant.
- Inspect the existing clip and any seal or gasket at the mounting point, and replace them if they are perished or missing.
