What it is
The Worcester Bosch 7 litre expansion vessel is a sealed chamber containing a pressurised air cushion, fitted to Greenstar and RD series appliances. It absorbs the expansion of water as the system heats, holding internal pressure within safe limits and protecting the boiler and connected pipework from excess pressure. The vessel is a direct replacement item for the original unit fitted at manufacture.
Signs this part needs replacing
- System pressure climbs sharply as the appliance heats up and drops again once it cools.
- The pressure relief valve discharges water, often seen at the discharge pipe outside the property.
- The boiler loses pressure repeatedly and needs topping up by hand.
- The pressure gauge reads high from cold, or swings widely during a heating cycle.
- Water is present at the vessel's air valve when the Schrader valve is depressed.
