What it is

The Worcester Bosch 87161082120 is a 20-plate heat exchanger for the Greenstar combi boiler range. It sits on the domestic hot water side of the appliance and transfers heat from the primary heating circuit into the mains-fed water supply as it passes through the plates. A blocked, scaled or leaking plate pack shows up quickly as poor hot water performance or a pressure loss on the heating side.

Signs this part needs replacing

  • Domestic hot water runs hot and cold, or the temperature swings as taps are opened and closed.
  • Reduced hot water flow rate compared with the boiler's normal output.
  • Water weeping from the plate pack or staining around the heat exchanger mounting.
  • System pressure dropping with no visible leak elsewhere on the heating circuit.
  • Heavy scale or sludge build-up on the plates, common in hard water areas.

Before you order

  • Check the GC number and appliance serial plate against the compatibility list to confirm the correct plate count for your model.
  • Cross-check the alternative part numbers above, as more than one number may be listed for the same exchanger.
  • Have a new gasket or seal kit to hand if the existing seals are disturbed during removal.
  • This part is fitted to a gas appliance; installation must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
