What it is
The ionisation electrode is a flame sensing component used on Chaffoteaux Minima MX2 and Minima SE System gas boilers. It sits in the burner flame path and returns a small ionisation current to the control board, which confirms that a flame is present and allows the boiler to continue running. If the signal is lost, the board shuts the gas valve and the boiler locks out.
Signs this part needs replacing
- Boiler fires, then locks out after a few seconds because no flame signal is proved
- Repeated lockouts on the flame supervision sequence
- Intermittent shutdown during a demand for heat
- Visible damage to the electrode tip, ceramic insulator or lead
- Soot or oxide build-up on the electrode probe affecting the sensing current
