What it is

The Vaillant 509228 is a pressure relief valve used in Vaillant gas boilers. It opens automatically when system pressure exceeds the set limit, discharging water to prevent damage to the boiler and connected pipework. It is fitted to the VU 656 range of appliances.

Signs this part needs replacing

  • Water weeping or dripping from the discharge pipe when the system is at normal operating pressure
  • System pressure repeatedly dropping, requiring frequent topping up
  • Visible scale, corrosion or debris around the valve seat or outlet
  • Valve failing to discharge when system pressure rises above the set limit
  • Water tracking from the valve body onto surrounding components

Before you order

  • Confirm the boiler model against the fitment list above, as the valve is specific to the VU 656 range
  • Check the existing valve body and outlet for the part number or matching configuration
  • Verify the system pressure gauge reading and confirm the fault lies with the valve rather than the expansion vessel or filling loop
  • Have the system isolated and drained before fitting
