What it is

The Ferroli 3980H820 is an 8 litre expansion vessel supplied as a kit for the Bluehelix Hitech RRT range of gas boilers. The vessel provides the air cushion that absorbs the expansion of system water as it heats, limiting pressure rise within the sealed heating circuit. It is fitted to the 24C and 28C models in that family.

Signs this part needs replacing

  • System pressure climbs quickly once the boiler fires and the heating circuit warms up.
  • The pressure relief valve discharges, or water is seen at the PRV discharge pipe.
  • Boiler pressure drops repeatedly and needs topping up, with no visible leak on the system.
  • Tapping the vessel gives a dull, water-filled sound rather than a hollow note.
  • Pressure swings widely between cold and hot states on the boiler gauge.
