What it is
The Ideal 178106 is an EC1 PWM solar controller used in Ideal solar thermal systems. It manages the circulation pump between the solar collector array and the cylinder, varying pump speed by pulse-width modulation so that flow matches the heat available at the collector. It is supplied by Ideal for the Keston Solar and Ideal Solar ranges.
Signs this part needs replacing
- The solar pump runs continuously at one speed, or does not run at all, regardless of collector temperature
- Collector temperature climbs on sunny days but the cylinder does not gain heat
- The controller display is blank, frozen or showing a fault indication
- The pump cycles or hunts instead of settling to a steady speed
- Cylinder temperature falls short of the set value during peak solar gain
