What it is

The Ideal 174790 is a thermistor boiler control sensor manufactured by Ideal Heating. It is a temperature-sensing component used within the boiler's control circuit, feeding temperature information back to the appliance so that firing, modulation and safety responses are managed correctly. It is listed against the Ideal Esprit and Esprit 2 ranges.

Signs this part needs replacing

  • Boiler fails to fire or locks out intermittently with no obvious mechanical cause
  • Domestic hot water runs hot and cold, or the temperature swings without the tap being adjusted
  • Central heating flow temperature reads incorrectly on the display, or the boiler short-cycles
  • Fault codes relating to temperature sensing or flow/return temperature appear on the control panel
  • Resistance readings taken across the sensor fall outside the expected range for the appliance

Before you order

  • Confirm the appliance GC number against the compatibility list, as the same model name can appear across several build variants
  • Check the existing sensor against the alternative numbers 1780092 and N3187 before removing it
  • Inspect the sensor pocket and any sealing washer or O-ring at the same time, as these are often disturbed during removal
  • Isolate the appliance and follow the manufacturer's wiring and resistance test procedure before fitting
