What it is

The Ideal 174387 is a control module for Ideal Commercial Imax Xtra appliances, built around a printed circuit board that governs the boiler's operating sequence. It handles the signals that start and stop the fan, gas valve, pump and ignition train, and it monitors the feedback from the appliance's sensors so that each demand is carried out within the manufacturer's parameters. The module is supplied by Ideal as a serviceable spare for the Imax Xtra range and is the board engineers reach for when the appliance loses control of its sequence or stops responding to a call for heat.

Signs this part needs replacing

  • The appliance does not respond to a call for heat, or the start sequence stalls before ignition.
  • A blank, unlit or erratic display on the control panel.
  • Repeated lockouts or fault codes that clear only temporarily and return on the next demand.
  • The fan, pump or gas valve is not energised when the boiler is asked to run.
  • Intermittent operation that changes with temperature, vibration or after the board has warmed up.

Before you order

  • Confirm the appliance model and serial number against the compatibility list; the E160 and F160 variants are listed separately and the board must match the unit being repaired.
  • Check the existing board and the appliance manual for the alternative number 1779241, which may be quoted in place of 174387.
  • Inspect the connector plugs and wiring loom for heat damage, corrosion or loose terminals before fitting a replacement module, as these faults can mimic a failed board.
  • Isolate the electrical supply at the isolator before removing the old module, and follow the manufacturer's wiring diagram when reconnecting.
