What it is

The Ideal 174200 is a diverter valve cartridge kit supplied with a grey box Honeywell actuator. It belongs to the diverter and motorised valve group of service components used across Ideal domestic heating appliances, and its job is to route water around the appliance so that heating and hot water demands are satisfied in the correct order.

The cartridge sits inside the valve body and is driven by the actuator head. As the actuator moves, the cartridge opens and closes the internal ports that feed the central heating circuit, the domestic hot water circuit, or both together. Because the two parts work as a pair, the kit is supplied with the actuator so that a worn cartridge and a tired motor can be renewed in one visit.

Signs this part needs replacing

  • No hot water while the heating continues to run normally
  • Radiators warming up when only a hot water draw-off has been called for
  • Domestic hot water running lukewarm, or cycling hot and cold during use
  • Actuator head buzzing, failing to move, or not returning to its rest position
  • Water weeping from the cartridge body or around the valve spindle

Before you order

  • Confirm the appliance model and GC number, as the same valve body can be used across several build variants
  • Compare the number on the existing valve or in the appliance service documentation against 174200
  • Inspect the sealing washers and O-rings on the valve body and renew them if they are hardened or flattened
  • Isolate the appliance and drain down before removing the cartridge or actuator head
