What it is

The Ideal 173969 is a diverter valve head kit manufactured for Ideal domestic heating appliances. The head is the operating section of a diverter valve, the component that directs water or gas flow through the appliance so it can move between heating and hot water operation as demand changes. It is supplied under the Ideal Spares brand as a serviceable replacement part for a valve head that has stopped responding correctly.

Because the head carries the moving mechanism rather than the full valve body, it is often the first item to fail when a valve becomes sluggish, noisy or stuck in one position. Replacing the head restores correct flow direction and helps the appliance maintain dependable performance across both circuits.

Signs this part needs replacing

  • The appliance fails to switch between heating and hot water modes, or remains stuck in one mode.
  • Domestic hot water runs cold or intermittent while the heating circuit continues to work normally.
  • The valve head is unresponsive, noisy or jammed when the appliance changes mode.
  • Fault or lockout codes relating to valve position or water flow appear on the appliance display.
  • Visible damage, corrosion or leakage around the valve head or its mounting.

Before you order

  • Confirm part number 173969 against the appliance data plate or the component being removed.
  • Check the appliance GC number and serial number to identify the correct variant.
  • Inspect the valve body and seals while the head is off; a gasket or seal kit may be needed on an older valve.
  • This part is not classified as a gas part, but any work carried out on the appliance itself should follow the manufacturer's instructions.
