What it is

The Ideal 173938 is a complete pump assembly supplied as a single unit for Ideal domestic boilers. It is the circulation pump that moves water around the primary heating circuit, drawing heated water from the heat exchanger and pushing it through the radiators and hot water cylinder coil before returning it to the boiler.

Because the assembly arrives complete rather than as a bare pump head, it covers the pump body, motor and connection points in one component, which suits a straight swap when the original pump has seized, become noisy or lost its flow rate.

Signs this part needs replacing

  • The boiler fires but the radiators stay cold or heat unevenly, with the flow and return temperatures close together.
  • The pump runs loudly, with grinding, humming or rumbling that continues after the system has settled.
  • The pump body is hot to touch while the pipework either side stays cool, indicating the impeller is not turning.
  • Repeated overheat lockouts or a flow-related fault code appears on the boiler display.
  • Water weeps from the pump housing, seal face or the joint between the pump and the boiler pipework.

Before you order

  • Check the boiler model and GC number on the appliance data badge and match them against the compatibility information for this part number.
  • Confirm the pump currently fitted carries the same Ideal part number, as pump assemblies differ between boiler ranges and revisions.
  • Inspect the pump gasket and sealing washers on removal, as these are commonly disturbed when the assembly is taken off and may need replacing separately.
