What it is

The Ideal 173378 is a complete tie rod supplied for 8-section boiler assemblies. Tie rods hold the cast iron sections of a sectional boiler together under tension, compressing the section seals so the waterways and flueways stay gas-tight and water-tight. This is a complete rod assembly rather than a bare length of studding, and it is listed under the rods and spindles part group.

Signs this part needs replacing

  • Weeping or staining at the section joints of the boiler block, indicating the sections are no longer held under correct tension.
  • Visible corrosion, pitting or necking on the rod, particularly where it passes through the section lugs.
  • A rod that has stretched or snapped, leaving the block unable to hold its seal.
  • Damaged or flattened threads that will not take the nut to the specified torque.
  • Rebuild work on an 8-section block where the original rods are being reused and are past their serviceable condition.

Before you order

  • Confirm the appliance model and that the boiler block is an 8-section assembly, as rod length is matched to the number of sections.
  • Check the previous number 82198972 against the rod currently fitted, as older stock may be marked with that reference.
  • Plan for the section seals and gaskets needed when the block is re-tensioned, as these are separate items.
