What it is

The Ideal 173202 is a combined temperature and pressure relief valve used on Ideal Istor unvented hot water cylinders. It opens when cylinder pressure or stored water temperature rises beyond the set limit, discharging water safely through the tundish and discharge pipework rather than allowing the vessel to over-pressurise. It is a serviceable safety component on the Istor HE range and is listed under Ideal part type Pressure & Temperature Relief Valve.

Signs this part needs replacing

  • Water continually dripping or running from the discharge pipe or tundish with the system cold
  • The valve weeps after a legitimate discharge and fails to reseat
  • Scale or debris on the seat holding the valve partially open
  • Cylinder pressure or temperature rising above normal operating limits
  • Visible corrosion, cracking or deformation around the valve body or outlet

Before you order

  • Confirm the model and GC number from the appliance data badge before ordering, as the Istor HE260 and HE325 use different GC references
  • Check the valve seat and mating face on removal and renew any washer or seal that shows damage
  • Isolate the cylinder, drain down as required and depressurise before removing the old valve
  • Refit and test the discharge pipework and tundish arrangement after replacement
