What it is
The Ideal thermistor 172671 is a temperature sensor used on Ideal Commercial Imax boilers. Its resistance falls as temperature rises, so the current passing through it changes in inverse proportion to the heat it is exposed to. The boiler's printed circuit board feeds a current to the thermistor and reads the result, using that signal to judge whether more or less heat is needed.

- Boiler runs erratically, with heat output that does not match demand
- Repeated lockouts or temperature-related fault codes on the display
- Domestic hot water or heating temperature drifting from the set point
- Overheating or short cycling as the PCB receives a false temperature reading
- Resistance readings from the sensor that fall outside the expected range for the measured temperature
