What it is

The Ideal Imax W ignition electrode is the component that generates the spark used to light the burner, and it also carries out flame sensing on the same assembly. It is manufactured by Ideal Heating for the Ideal Commercial Imax W range of boilers. Because it both ignites and monitors the flame, it forms part of the boiler's safety chain — the control board relies on its signal to confirm a flame is present before continuing to supply gas.

Signs this part needs replacing

  • The boiler attempts to fire but there is no spark at the burner
  • Repeated ignition attempts followed by a lockout or fault code
  • The burner lights briefly and then goes out because no flame is detected
  • Visible damage to the electrode tip, ceramic insulator or lead
  • Intermittent ignition that worsens as the electrode becomes contaminated or worn

Before you order

  • Check the GC number on the appliance data badge against the compatibility list to confirm the correct variant
  • Confirm the existing electrode matches part 172665 or alternative number 1178991 before ordering
  • Inspect the burner gasket and any seals disturbed during removal, and replace them if they are no longer serviceable
  • This part is fitted to a gas appliance; installation must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
