What it is
The Ideal thermistor sensor 172496 is a temperature-sensing component used in Ideal Mini and Europa boilers. It works by increasing circuit resistance as temperature falls, giving the printed control board (PCB) a resistance reading it uses to decide whether heat output should rise or drop. The sensor therefore sits at the centre of the boiler's temperature regulation loop.
Signs this part needs replacing
- Boiler temperature swings between too hot and too cool instead of holding steady
- Domestic hot water runs hot then cold, or heating output is erratic
- Boiler locks out or shuts down shortly after firing
- Fault codes relating to temperature sensing or flow/return temperature appear on the display
- Resistance readings from the sensor fall outside the expected range for the measured temperature
