What it is

The Ideal 172204 ionisation probe lead is an HT lead that connects the ionisation probe to the boiler control board on Ideal Commercial appliances. The ionisation probe sits in the burner flame path and returns a small current through this lead; the board reads that signal to confirm a flame is established and to keep the gas valve open. A sound lead is therefore essential to reliable ignition and continued running.

Signs this part needs replacing

  • The boiler fires and then locks out shortly afterwards, with the flame signal dropping out.
  • Repeated ignition attempts with no sustained flame detection.
  • Intermittent lockouts that clear on reset but return during the same heating cycle.
  • Visible damage to the lead: cracked or brittle insulation, scorching, or a loose crimped terminal at the probe or board end.
  • Fault codes or diagnostic readings pointing to a weak or absent ionisation current.

Before you order

  • Confirm the appliance model and serial number against the compatibility list, as several Concord variants use different leads.
  • Check the existing lead against the previous number 8358-4905 before ordering, since older stock may be marked with that reference.
  • Inspect the ionisation probe and its electrode condition at the same time, as a worn probe can produce the same symptoms as a faulty lead.
  • Work on the appliance should be carried out by a competent person, with the boiler isolated and made safe before the lead is disturbed.
