What it is
This is a domestic hot water (DHW) plate heat exchanger manufactured by Alpha. It is fitted to Alpha CB28 and CB28X LPG boilers, where it transfers heat from the primary circuit to the domestic hot water supply. The plate stack provides a large surface area in a compact body, so mains water is heated as it passes through the secondary side of the exchanger.
Signs this part needs replacing
- Domestic hot water runs cool or only lukewarm while the heating circuit works normally
- Hot water temperature fluctuates or drops sharply when a tap is opened
- Reduced hot water flow rate at outlets compared with previous performance
- Kettling, banging or rumbling noises from the boiler during hot water draw-off
- Water weeping from the plate pack or staining around the exchanger body
