What it is

The Ideal 004058 is a thermocouple supplied as a 600mm-length assembly for Ideal gas appliances. A thermocouple joins two dissimilar metals at a hot junction; when the pilot flame heats that junction a small electrical current is generated, which holds the gas valve open and keeps the burner alight. It is a safety-critical component on the pilot circuit of the appliance.

Signs this part needs replacing

  • The pilot flame lights but goes out as soon as the control knob is released.
  • The appliance repeatedly locks out or fails to fire on a call for heat.
  • No hot water or heating despite the pilot appearing to light normally.
  • The pilot flame is weak, unstable or will not hold after cleaning.
  • Intermittent shutdowns that clear on their own and then return.
