What it is
The Vaillant anode (G1, L=642) is a sacrificial anode supplied by Vaillant for use in its hot water cylinders. Fitted inside the cylinder, it corrodes in preference to the cylinder wall, protecting the steel vessel from electrolytic attack. It is a service item and is intended to be renewed periodically over the life of the cylinder.
Signs this part needs replacing
- The existing anode is heavily corroded, pitted or reduced in diameter when inspected.
- The anode has been consumed down to, or close to, its central core wire.
- Rumbling, popping or knocking noises from the cylinder during heating.
- Hot water has a metallic or unusual taste, or is discoloured.
- The cylinder is at or beyond the interval recommended for an anode check.

- Confirm the cylinder model and capacity against the fitment list above.
- Check the thread size and anode length on the existing cylinder match G1 and 642 mm.
- Inspect the cylinder connection point for corrosion or damage before fitting a new anode.
- Have the cylinder drained and depressurised before removal of the old anode.
