What it is
The anode is a sacrificial component fitted to the Glow-worm Xtramax HE appliance. It is designed to corrode in preference to the cylinder or vessel it serves, protecting the metalwork from the electrochemical action of the stored water. Once the anode material is consumed, protection is lost and the cylinder becomes vulnerable to corrosion.
Signs this part needs replacing
- Discoloured or rusty water drawn from the hot tap
- A sulphur or rotten-egg smell in the hot water supply
- Visible heavy pitting, crumbling or near-total consumption of the anode material on inspection
- Unexplained weeping or dampness around the cylinder connections
- The anode has been in service for a long period and has not been checked
