What it is

The Ravenheat short ignition or sensing electrode is a boiler electrode supplied under part number 0012CAN09005/2. Ravenheat boilers use two families of electrode: ignition electrodes, which generate the spark that lights the burner, and flame sensing electrodes, which detect whether a flame is actually present at the burner. This electrode is listed for both duties, making it a service item for the ignition and flame supervision circuits on the relevant Ravenheat appliances.

Flame detection is a safety-critical function: it confirms to the boiler's control board that combustion has been established, so the gas valve is not held open without a flame.

Signs this part needs replacing

  • The boiler attempts to fire but there is no spark at the burner, so ignition does not take place.
  • The appliance locks out repeatedly on start-up despite the gas supply and other ignition components being sound.
  • The burner lights but the boiler shuts down shortly afterwards because flame detection is not confirmed.
  • The electrode tip or ceramic insulator is visibly cracked, eroded, sooted or contaminated.
  • Ignition is intermittent, with the boiler firing on some attempts and locking out on others.

Before you order

  • Check the GC number and model on the appliance data badge against the compatibility list to confirm this electrode is the correct item.
  • Confirm the part number on the existing electrode, noting that 0012CAN09005/0 and 0012CAN09005/1 are earlier numbers for this item.
  • This part is fitted to a gas appliance; installation must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
